Job Summary

  • The Biological Safety Officer will be an integral part of the Safety Office Team Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC). Oversees the laboratory safety program for the Basic Science program of FCCC. In addition will serve as an expert resource in the development, implementation, and management of a newly renovated ABSL-3 facility. (RBP certification by the American Biosafety Association).

Education

  • Masters Degree : Biological Sciences in microbiology, bacteriology, virology, or related (Required)
  • Doctorate Degree : Biological Sciences in microbiology, bacteriology, virology, or related (Preferred)

Licenses and Certifications

  • CBSP - Cert Biological Safety Prof OR RBP - Reg Biosafety Professional (Required)

Experience

  • 3 Years experience in the field of biological safety in a biomedical research facility or microbiology research (Required)

General Responsibilities

  • Complies with all Temple University Health System policies and procedures, and all applicable accreditation standards, laws and regulations, including those regarding patient confidentiality such as, but not limited to, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, P. L. 104-191 ('HIPAA') and the rules and regulations implemented hereunder.
  • Adheres to and promotes Hospital Safety Standards and the Safety Management Plan.

  • Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures.
  • Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time.
  • Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self education, attends ongoing educational programs).
  • Demonstrates competency in providing patient care that is individualized relative to age, population, developmental, psycho-social-cultural and demonstrated needs.

Job Responsibilities

Safety Program

  • Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive laboratory safety program for research at the Cancer Center.
  • Provide technical guidance to staff regarding equipment, facilities and work practices for protection of personnel, laboratories and the environment from biological hazards.
  • Prepare and conduct safety training including biological safety, OSHA bloodborne pathogens, respiratory protection, controlled substance, chemical, general, and physical protection in laboratories, hazardous materials shipping, and other customized training as needed.
  • Conduct annual laboratory inspections, assist with remedial action, and maintain inspection reports.
  • Manage Safety Coordinator Program.
  • Manage the Respiratory Protection Program for research personnel.
  • Oversee the controlled substance program for research.

Incident Investigation

  • Investigate accidents involving bio-hazardous agents and overall safety issues and develop corrective action plans.
  • Provide emergency response support.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of biosafety principles and best practices and serve as a resource on related federal and state regulations.
  • Ensure Center compliance with regulations and guidelines pertaining to use, handling, shipping, and disposal of potential biohazards materials.
  • Assist with investigations, reporting of non-compliance and development of corrective action plans.
  • Serve as the Biosafety Officer member of the Institutional Biosafety

Biosafety Policies and Procedures

  • Prepare, update and draft policies, guidelines, and procedures for biological hazards and processes.

Committee Participation

  • Committee (IBC) and assist the IBC Chair by reviewing research and clinical protocols, interacting with PI's, providing guidance to IBC on containment issues, developing and implementing IBC-approved SOPs, and providing administrative support.
  • Develop and implement emergency response procedures for incidents involving biohazardous agents and materials.
