Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

Virginia Peninsula Community College welcomes applications for a Dean of Arts, Business, Humanities and Social Sciences (ABHS). Founded in 1967, we serve the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg as well as counties of James City and York. As of Academic year 2021-2022, our college was the sixth largest in the Virginia Community College System in terms of students served. The College served 8,987 students in academic credit instruction in that year. We are proud of our award-winning faculty, our nationally accredited and professionally recognized academic and training programs, and strong dual enrollment and early college programs, powerful partnerships, and our student success outcomes. This college epitomizes its mission to change lives and transform communities.
The college is nestled in the backyard of the NASA Langley Research Center, Jefferson Lab, multiple military bases, the largest nuclear ship and submarine building company in the United States, the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, Colonial Williamsburg, and several major medical and healthcare institutions. Our community is home to the Commonwealth’s largest infrastructure project, the first U.S. offshore wind energy development in federal waters, a diverse array of homeland defense and security organizations, excellent public-school systems, renown colleges and universities, theme parks, museums, research centers, entrepreneurial incubation labs, fine dining, arts, entertainment, and leisure.
Job purpose:
The Dean provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the college’s Division, with responsibility for degree credit programs, as well as Career Studies Certificate programs. As part of an academic management team pursuing excellence through collaboration and creation of a learner-centered environment, the position reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean implements division goals and objectives related to the college’s strategic plan; oversees program and course development and evaluations; promotes and maintains relationships with community agencies, organizations, and businesses that support the division; recommends the hiring of full-time and adjunct faculty and division staff; evaluates full-time and adjunct faculty and division staff; implements college policies and procedures appropriate to division operations; manages operations of relevant grants and contracts; manages the division’s budget and expenditures; and ensures compliance with state-mandated performance measures, regional accreditation requirements, and standards for professional program accreditation.

A description of the academic divisions
The Division for Arts, Business, Humanities and Social Sciences (ABHS) contains a wide variety of academic programs including Associate of Arts degrees, Associate of Science degrees, Associate of Applied Science degrees, Certificates, and Career Studies Certificates that support direct transfer to four-year colleges and universities, as well as direct pathways to careers. The academic disciplines include Accounting, Arts, Business Administration & Management, Communication Studies and Theatre, Education, English, Financial Services, Geography, History, Humanities, Marketing, Music, Philosophy, Photography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and World Languages.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- A master’s degree in a discipline served by the unit or a related master’s degree with a doctorate in higher education leadership, educational administration, or any related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Experience in curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation, integrated higher education student information systems, and development and application of academic policies and procedures.
Specialized knowledge and experience in:
- Implementing best practices and innovative strategies that support teaching and learning.
- Supervising personnel, training methodologies, and communication techniques.
- Planning, implementing, and monitoring of budgets.
- Managing and developing curriculum.

Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in education leadership, educational administration, or any related field.
- Extensive/progressive experience with one or more of the following: dual enrollment, early college, and college readiness in conjunction with regional high schools.
- Familiarity with regional accreditation standards as well as program accreditation, certification, and licensure requirements.
- Teaching and/or administrative experience at a college or university and experience with college transfer and career & technical programs.
