Job description

Ness is an early-stage, remote-first startup at the unique intersection of fintech and healthcare. We’re on a mission to build a world where everyone can afford to be healthy.

We’re a seed stage company funded by some of the most iconic operators and entrepreneurs in the space (e.g., Sweetgreen, Headspace, One Medical, Thrive Market).

Started by the former CEO & Founder of Greatist (acquired by Healthline in 2019), we're building an AmEx-like credit card for health. We’ve got enormous ambitions to flip healthcare on its head through an alternative to health insurance that rewards consumers for the right behaviors and brings down the cost of healthcare.

tl;dr: We're an early-stage startup hiring a Head of Engineering to help us build a best-in-class credit card experience and platform. This position is fully remote, but US-time zones only, please! We're on an ambitious mission to build a world where everyone can afford to be healthy. More details about us, the role, and the interview process are below.

Base comp $210k-$275k, dependent on experience

Meaningful equity and benefits—see our Callings page for more details

What Impact You Can Make

Generally, we're looking for someone who loves building the first version of a mobile-native product and platform and has previously helped create a delightful consumer-first user experience. We can't build this business without someone like you.

Ultimately, you will be one of our most important builders responsible for laying the technical foundation of a truly innovative product with the potential to change healthcare and financial services forever.

Our Core Values

We aren't a family, we're an incredible team. A super team that does things differently... At Ness, our core values are the source of our POWER.

Pencil It In

We move fast, try new things fearlessly, think differently, and learn from our mistakes.

One Ness

We're all on the same team, give regular feedback, have short memories, plus can "disagree and commit."

Work Crispy

We value clear, rigorous thought, and we're always prepared.

Embrace Your Mythical Creature

Our differences make us special. Come as you are (but no trolls, please!)

Right Way To Win (Not The Easy Way)

We believe in doing well AND doing good.

You May Be The Ideal Candidate If...

If you don’t meet 100% of the below qualifications, you should still seriously consider applying. We take a holistic approach to evaluating talent for our team.

  • You have significant experience working on and scaling a rapidly growing consumer card product, ideally a credit card.

  • You are eager to actively manage an engineering team and grow it— and even roll up your sleeves to code, if needed.

  • You have both the ability to bring out the best in engineers AND willingness to keep engineers accountable to build a world-class team.

  • Your leadership style incorporates crisp communication and moving fast (but not breaking things).

  • You are pragmatic with technology choices and can balance the need for velocity and iteration with a strategic and scalable architecture.

  • You thrive in the ambiguity of an early-stage startup and are motivated by growing and scaling a great product that reaches MMMs of users.

  • You have direct experience with payments and/or fintech vendors such as card processors, card networks, BIN sponsor banks, and general ledger companies.

  • You are passionate about the impact you can have on bringing much-needed affordability to the health & wellness industry.

Things You Might Do...

  • Be a highly technical engineering leader with deep experience in mobile app development, networking, systems, and software.

  • Manage a team of frontend and backend engineers working to build and scale a delightful credit card experience and the underlying fintech infrastructure that powers it.

  • Define and drive the development of a technical roadmap that meets the needs of both the business and product.

  • Operate in a rapidly evolving start up environment—consistently hitting timelines, adapting quickly to new information, and re-prioritizing the team’s focus as needed.

  • Be an effective people manager and build a high-performing, remote-first engineering team through thoughtful design, people in the right roles, and a product-centric culture of impact and success.

  • Help engineers develop their careers, assigning them to projects tailored to their skills, long-term development, personalities, and work styles.

  • Assess employee performance constantly—swiftly address under-performance and frequently recognize excellent performance.

  • Communicate and collaborate cross-functionally to drive efforts that shape our strategy and roadmap.

How We Hire

First, we don't discriminate. We know from experience a more diverse and inclusive team leads to bigger impact and success.

1. First Hello

You'll talk to our Co-Founder & Chief Experience Officer, Kenneth, for 45 minutes. There's nothing to prepare in advance.

First, we want to figure out if you've got the right experience for this position and if working at Ness is a fit for you and us. We'll have reviewed your application and resume in detail, so this discussion will be focused on your past experience and what you’re looking for in your next opportunity. We want to build conviction you'll succeed in this job the same way you've succeeded in the past.

Then, you'll have time to ask us anything! (Well, mostly anything.)

2. A Deeper Dive

Once we have a sense that there’s a potential match, we’ll dig in further. In this 45-minute conversation with Jessica, our Head of Product, we’ll dive into specific behavioral interview topics to better understand your experience. We’ll talk through the results you drove and insights you took away from relevant areas of experience.

You’ll again have time to ask us questions.

3. Let’s Work Together

We’ll start with a Technical Interview. This interview will be a series of exercises meant to build confidence in your technical leadership, ability to be hands-on with the team, and aptitude to unblock technical problems and make technical decisions.

After this, we'll complete a Whiteboarding Challenge with you. Here, we’ll ask you to solve a problem with us so we can experience how you communicate and how we would work together.

Why? Well, we believe communication skills are key for leaders in a remote-first company—and want a chance to see you collaborate. We'll share more details about this when we get there!

4. Meet More of the Team

Once we have an idea of what it’s like working together, we'll host an intimate Fireside Chat with the engineering team. Here, you’ll have a chance to meet our engineers - and they’ll meet you!

This gives us an opportunity to introduce you to more of the team that you’ll be working closely with.

As always, you'll also have a chance to dig in with your own questions.

5. Final Interview

Finally, you’ll meet our CEO & Founder, Derek, on a 30-minute video call.

He will have reviewed your application, take-home, and any prior meeting notes in detail, so the discussion will be on what brings out the best in you and what's next. It’ll mostly be an opportunity for you to ask questions about whether Ness is the best possible place for you to succeed plus build his confidence that you’re the best possible hire for Ness to be successful.

6. References

Oh—and, with your help, we'll reach out to folks you've worked with in the past. We're usually pretty far along here, so this is mostly about learning from outside perspectives about how to manage and empower you best.

7. The Job Offer

Got this far? That means you're in. Expect a personal call and welcome to the team!

The position of Head of Engineering is classified as an M5 Engineering Manager under Ness' leveling framework. Should an offer of employment be extended, the official title for this position will be M5 Engineering Manager per Ness' leveling framework. We'll be sure to touch on this during the interview process!

No recruiters or agencies, please. Thanks!

Please be aware of fake job offers coming from people claiming to be Ness Well, Inc. employees. Ness employees and/or our recruiters will never ask you for money or personal information like bank account numbers, and will always ask for a phone call or video call as the first step in our hiring process.
