Job description
The City of Norfolk’s Department of Public Works is currently seeking an experienced Lead Mason within our Streets & Bridges Division. This position w finish concrete, brick removal, replacement and related materials used in construction and repair of sidewalks, roadways, curbs, gutters, bridges, and similar structures.
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses and visitors, including the City’s storm water system, street network, waste management and recycling systems. The Department is comprised of 8 divisions that function collectively to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, and the streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained.
- Spreads, levels, finishes and shapes freshly poured concrete in the repair and construction of a wide variety of structures.
- Prepares sites for concrete work by breaking up damaged concrete, leveling or contouring the ground, building and setting forms, cutting and placing reinforcement materials, and similar activities.
- Uses hand tools and power equipment.
- Reads and interprets plans, blueprints and state and federal specifications; performs the necessary tasks according to required standards for dimensions and finish.
- Builds and/or repairs sidewalks, curbs, gutters, steps, ramps, drainage structures, support structures and related types of structures.
- Repairs brick by removing and replacing damaged brick, cobblestone, sidewalk or roadway, replacing and relaying masonry or cutting stone with masonry saw, measuring the distance, estimating materials needed, and finishing work.
- Assumes the duties of supervisor in his absence by completing time sheets, performing inspections on jobs, contacting customers, closing jobs, directing activities of team, using work management system to monitor jobs, and planning and scheduling materials, equipment and personnel for asphalt and concrete repairs.
- Cleans work site areas and equipment.
- Responds to emergencies by removing snow, ice and damage debris. Operates equipment to perform ice control and storm clean up.
- Must be able to operate both standard and automatic transmission vehicles and light construction equipment.
- Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions given by a supervisor.
- Must be able to stand, bend, stoop and climb onto construction equipment.
- Must be able to load and unload equipment, clean work sites, and lift a maximum of 100 pounds.
- Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold temperatures.
- Must be able to work long shifts during emergency weather conditions.
Required:
- Four years' experience in masonry work.
- Valid Driver's License required. Must provide a copy of Division of Motor Vehicle driving record (obtained within last 30 days) during the interview.
- Must obtain a class B commercial driver’s license within six months of employment with the City.
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 6:30 am to 3:00 pm; 40 hours per week every week; This position may require the candidate to work a mandatory rotating on-call schedule and respond to after-hour emergencies.
