Performs a variety of highly skilled work in the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of trucks, vans, automobiles, and other automotive and power equipment.

Instructional Support Specialist III -Lab Tech
Under the supervision of the Area Administrator and receives technical direction from one or more members of the faculty, provides assistance to students involved in technical or scientific laboratory settings designed to further their knowledge in a specific discipline. Sets up, demonstrates, oversees, and designs test or simulation situated to support learning in compliance with student lab requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance Specialist III -HD Mechanic
  • Receives requests through work orders or direct contact. Assesses the nature of the repair request and assigns a priority and estimated time of completion. Prepares a schedule for preventative maintenance.
  • Observes and reviews the work of other Maintenance Specialists who may be assigned to assist with automotive servicing, offering tips and suggestions for time savings, and repair techniques.
  • Performs complex work in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment including tractors, trucks, power mowers, power sweepers, and forklifts. Determines extent and type of repair needed. Estimates cost of repairs.
  • Overhauls light duty and diesel engines and power transmission systems. Installs rings, rod bearings, main bearings, and brakes. Repairs transmissions and differentials. Overhauls and renews wheel cylinders. Tunes engines. Adjusts points, carburetors, valves, clutches, brakes, etc., and repairs, balances, and changes wheels.
  • Fabricates frames and body parts using welders, torches, and specialized fabricating tool sand devices.
  • Performs preventive maintenance. Lubricates vehicles. Changes oil and oil filters. Services air conditioners. Orders parts and accessories. Maintains shop tools and equipment. Maintains shop in a safe and orderly condition.
  • Maintains adequate inventory levels of parts and supplies. Orders parts and accessories for the shop. Enters work orders into a preventative maintenance system.
  • Maintains shop tools and equipment in working order. Ensures and maintains shop in a safe and orderly condition
  • Maintains records of repair and maintenance work.
  • Responds to emergency breakdowns and repair vehicles at emergency site.
  • Operates a variety of vehicle maintenance and repair tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • May lead and instruct a small team of lower level maintenance specialists or helpers.
  • Provides support to Plumbing, Carpentry, Electrical, Wastewater, and HVAC areas as needed. May perform the duties of Maintenance Specialist on an intermittent basis depending on need.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.


Instructional Support Specialist III -Lab Tech
  • Works with students individually and in class-sized groups to enhance their learning. Provides direct assistance in the use of equipment and materials needed for instruction as well as orienting students to the laboratory. Sets up established laboratory experiences for students as required by course outline or faculty direction.
  • Works with faculty/instructional administrator to design, construct, modify or rebuild equipment, modules, experiments that will be used in the classrooms/laboratories in a division comprised of various related but different subject areas. Provides technical assistance to students, faculty and staff; troubleshoots and diagnoses problems with technical equipment and measuring devices; assists in setting up laboratories.
  • May assist instructors in the classroom/laboratory concurrently with lecture or discussion. May actually perform more dangerous and/or complex procedures for students.
  • Receives study and simulation modules from faculty members, then facilitates small groups of students who are participating in the exercises.
  • Designs, constructs and/or fabricates equipment, modules, and experiments that will assist the instructor in the delivery of desired instructional outcomes.
  • Acquires, maintains, and inventories equipment, materials, and supplies such as but not limited to metals, live and preserved biologic specimens, etc., and written materials required for student instructional needs. Performs repairs on equipment and learning assistance devices. Checks out and maintains control over tools, equipment, supplies, materials used by students. May be required to maintain contact with appropriate vendors.
  • Over the telephone or in person provides students, staff, instructors and public within formation relating to specific programs. May take messages for students or instructors who are working in the area. May copy materials for distribution for students.
  • Maintains records of laboratory activity, including typing forms or inputting data or otherwise retaining information regarding the acquisition, maintenance and distribution of tools, equipment, materials, supplies, and/or written materials. This includes documentation to support the handling of hazardous or dangerous materials, substances, and chemicals.
  • Provides for the general cleanliness and security of the laboratory work area. Handles and disposes of harmful or hazardous materials according to specific instructions relating to their disposal. Participates in providing for a safe environment for the conduct of the laboratory. Reports maintenance problems as they occur.
  • Oversees the work of student helpers. Coordinates their activities in support of the instructional goals. Trains student helpers in appropriate technical aspects of their work.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills
Maintenance Specialist III -HD Mechanic
Requires advanced technical knowledge of the standard practices, techniques and tools used in repairing, maintaining and overhauling gasoline, diesel, mechanical, CNG and electrical powered bus and automotive equipment. Will have a working knowledge of heavy duty equipment as well as full knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the diagnosis, maintenance, adjustment and repair of automotive and heavy equipment. Requires knowledge of the principles and methods used in preventive maintenance for automotive equipment. Must have in-depth knowledge of work hazards and safety practices.

Instructional Support Specialist III -Lab Tech
The position requires specialized knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures, and techniques of the assigned subject area. Requires a well-developed knowledge of instructional methods and techniques. Requires in-depth knowledge of laboratory procedures, organization, equipment, tests, experiments, and simulations. Requires a working knowledge of the handling and treatment of harmful chemicals, substances, and equipment, depending on the type of lab. Requires sufficient reading, math, and writing skills to perform individual and small group tutoring. Requires sufficient human relations skill to facilitate learning with small groups and to convey technical concepts to others. Requires sensitivity to the needs and needs and behavior of student of various ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds.

Abilities
Maintenance Specialist III -HD Mechanic
Requires the ability to perform all of the duties of the position effectively and efficiently and at a skill level commensurate with assignment. Requires the ability to perform vehicle maintenance duties including inspection, diagnosis and analysis techniques. Requires the ability to operate a variety of vehicle maintenance tools and equipment skillfully and safely. Must be able to estimate time and cost required for repairs. Must be able to operate a variety of equipment for purposes of testing and safety. Must have sufficient communication skills in order to interact with individuals in own work group and other College staff, must be able to give instruction on work methods, and maintain harmonious work relationships. Requires the ability to work variable schedules to facilitate efficient project completion and special events.

Instructional Support Specialist III -Lab Tech
Requires the ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position including deliver instruction to small groups, design and set up laboratory assignments, experiments, simulations, and tests, as well as student projects. Must be able to maintain the lab and equipment in a safe and organized manner, including the handling of hazardous or dangerous materials and equipment as required for some labs. Requires the ability to instruct students in the use of equipment and programs. Requires the ability to perform routine record keeping and report writing duties. Must be able to organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively. Must be able to communicate in both formal and informal setting with students, instructors, and other interested parties. Must be able to coordinate the activities of work study students.

Physical Abilities
Maintenance Specialist III -HD Mechanic
Requires standing, stooping, kneeling, frequent carrying and lifting of light to medium weight materials up to 50 pounds, and occasional pushing and guiding of objects over 50 pounds. Requires near visual acuity and accommodation (ability to bring items into sharp focus), strong arm, hand and finger dexterity, ability to grasp and visual acuity including hand-eye coordination. Requires auditory abilities to project voice in a noisy shop environment and to carry on conversations. Requires the ability to read and write at a level sufficient to perform all of the duties of the position including reading safety information and technical manuals. Requires the ability to perform precise measurements and mathematics sufficient to prepare estimates.

Instructional Support Specialist III -Lab Tech
Requires sufficient ambulatory to move to work stations. Requires good arm, hand, finger dexterity in order to use a personal computer keyboard and other office equipment. Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in one-on-one and small group settings. Requires visual acuity to read numbers and words and to observe students perform tests and assignments.

Education and Experience
Maintenance Specialist III -HD Mechanic
Specialized training in automotive repair required. The position requires a minimum of 5 years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles including experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy gasoline and diesel powered equipment, including either service leadership, customer service, or training.

Instructional Support Specialist III -Lab Tech
The position requires a Bachelors Degree in the science area being supported. Alternatively requires an Associates degree and over 5 years of experience in a laboratory, learning support, or equivalent environment.
