Medical Assistant - Lax

Job Description

Hours: M-F 8:30 to 4:30pm

Department: Jonathan Lax Center, Philadelphia FIGHT Community Health Centers

Supervisor: Director, Nursing

Full-Time, 40 hours per week; non-exempt

Philadelphia FIGHT is an AIDS Service Organization that recently became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). We have been providing primary care for people living with HIV/AIDS and those at very high risk since 1990. Our program is a team-centered, multi-disciplinary approach that in addition to clinical care, offers access to behavioral health and substance abuse services, a wide range of educational programs, HIV counselling and testing, and youth programs. The Jonathan Lax Treatment Center, our first Health Center, provides culturally competent, non-judgmental, high quality health care to patients living with HIV. In addition to health care, the Jonathan Lax Treatment Center connects patients with social services, resources, and insurance benefits.

The ideal candidate will take a trauma-informed and harm-reduction approach to health care.

The trauma-informed approach is guided by four assumptions: Realization about trauma and how it can affect people and groups, recognizing the signs of trauma, having a system which can respond to trauma, and resisting re-traumatization. Unlike approaches that insist that people stop using drugs, harm reduction acknowledges that many people are not able or willing to abstain from illicit drug use, and that abstinence should not be a precondition for help.
