Job Description Personal Care Attendant

A Personal Care Attendant (PCA) is responsible for ensuring the quality and safe delivery of home care services in accordance with agency philosophy and established standards of primary home care.

The primary role of a PCA includes but is not limited to: Providing personal assistance services to clients in their place of residence; providing a safe and clean environment; work cooperatively with clients and their families; and report observations and problems to the supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Promotes positive, supportive respectful communication to client/family and agency personnel.

2. Provides an environment that promotes respect for the client’s privacy and property.

3. Provides services to clients according to the Individual Service Plan. Services may include any or all the following but are limited to. a. Assistance in maintaining a safe environment and providing a degree of emotional support necessary for the client’s well-being. b. Home Management preparation and serving of light meals, grocery shopping, linen changes, laundry, light housekeeping as directed. c. Assistance with personal care, feeding, exercising, bathing, dressing, grooming, routine hair/skin care, toileting, transfer/ambulation as directed.

4. Provides a clean, safe, and comfortable environment.

5. Provides skills necessary to perform services according to agency policy.

6. Appropriately reports changes to ensure continuity of care and ensure quality and safe delivery of support services. a. Notifies supervisor immediately of any change in the client's condition or circumstances that might indicate the need for a change in duties assigned or that might require additional intervention. b. Communicates client's questions, concerns, needs, and/or complaints to supervisors immediately. c. Maintains confidentiality of client information. d. Practices and implements infection control and safety measures and reports all-hazards/accidents immediately. e. Utilizes proper body mechanics consistently. f. Communicates information regarding client household needs to appropriate individuals in a consistent and timely manner. g. Communicates to supervisor when the client is hospitalized, absent from home, has moved residences, and/or changed phone number.

7. Demonstrates commitment, professional growth, and competency by: A. Attending basic orientation prior to being assigned in a client’s home. B. Attending agency in-service training as required.

8. Promotes the agency philosophy and administrative policies to ensure the quality of care.

9. Fulfills additional performance responsibilities as assigned and necessary.

Qualifications:

1. Must be at least 18 years of age or, if under 18 years of age, be a high school graduate or enrolled in a vocational education program.

2. Must maintain a neat appearance.

3. Must be dependable.

4. Possess basic knowledge of personal care and home maintenance.

5. Current Personal Care Aide (PCA) Certification/CNA’s (Certified Nurse Aides).

Experience:

1. Have proof of competency through education and/or experience or demonstrates competency to perform tasks as assigned.

Skills:

1. Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and is competent to perform tasks assigned by the supervisor.

2. Demonstrates caring empathy for the welfare of clients.

Background Checks:

1. Must agree to and pass a criminal history check and an Employee Misconduct Registry Check if applicable.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

1. Prolonged standing and walking required.

2. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

3. Ability to work under stressful conditions to meet deadlines, identify client needs, make quick decisions, and meet client/family psychosocial needs.

4. Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.

5. Ability to utilize durable medical equipment in the home.

Working Conditions:

Works in clients' residence in various conditions, possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases, the ability to work a flexible schedule, the ability to travel locally, some exposure to unpleasant weather.
