What will you do?
- The Postdoctoral Fellowship program consists of two 1-year rotations, the first of which will be in Advanced Technology (Hillsboro, OR) working on focused ion beam chemistry development.
- Work and be mentored in a team of Scientists and Engineers to develop workflow solutions for electron and ion microscopy.
- Implement experiments and projects in a lab environment. Contribute to scientific understanding of particle-matter interactions.
- Specifically, explore the chemical influence of different ion beams in gas-assisted etching and deposition processes.
- Report on new microscopy technologies including publications, patents, and applications.
- Collaborate with colleagues and customers to develop new ideas into projects capable of capturing or creating new markets and applications.
- Travel to conferences, customers or other Thermo Fisher sites up to 20% including international.
- Report results out to multiple levels of business leadership.
The Postdoctoral Fellowship program prepares participants for roles of increasing responsibility through a combination of rotational assignments, structured learning, formalized feedback, and mentoring. Program participants will have the opportunity to interact with senior R&D leaders and participate in various key research initiatives.
The position will be based in the CSO Office and corporate R&D organization for two years. We will match the successful candidate with a mentor and R&D division that matches their area of interest/study. To broaden exposure to R&D operations within Thermo Fisher, the candidate will rotate through two 12-month Postdoctoral training assignments. The placings will vary and will be dependent on a match between candidate research interests, qualifications, Thermo Division needs and other logistical factors such as geographic location.
The initial geographical location will be Hillsboro, Oregon. Candidates may rotate through other locations in Massachusetts, California, Texas, etc. Geographic flexibility is required both during and upon completion of the program.
We are seeking to place a Postdoctoral candidate within Advanced Technology within the Materials and Structural Analysis Division (MSD). The successful candidate will study electron and ion sample interactions, which are at the heart of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Electron Microscope (EM), Focused Ion Beam (FIB), and DualBeam tools serving the Semiconductor, Life Science and Materials Science markets.
Other possible areas of research during rotation include Life Sciences, Industrial & Applied Sciences, Clinical & Diagnostics, Lab Solutions, Digital Solutions.
The program affords participants an outstanding opportunity to produce results, quickly gain credibility and develop a strong company network over two years. Prior to completing the program, participants will work with the Program Manager and interview for opportunities across the R&D organization.

We are seeking highly motivated, global candidates for inclusion in a newly established Postdoctoral Fellowship program within the R&D organization of Thermo Fisher Scientific. Dependent on the successful candidate’s technical background and expertise, two rotations will be completed.
Upon completion of the second 12-month phase, we will seek to place the candidate in an R&D position.
How will you get there?
The position is offered to recent graduates with a Ph.D. in physical science (physics, materials science, chemistry) or equivalent, and a track record of academic success and scientific methodology.
- Doctorate/Ph.D.
- Good grasp of chemistry, physics and materials science.
- Knowledge of inorganic and organometallic chemical reactivity and synthesis.
- Experience with DualBeam, FIB, SEM, TEM or similar.
- Experience with any of standard chemistry analytical techniques (FTIR, Mass Spec., etc.), electron microscopy analytical techniques (EDS, EBSD, etc.), and/or surface analytical techniques (Auger, SIMS, etc.).
- Able to work in a lab-based research environment, including use of scientific instrumentation along with data analysis skills using Python or similar, and sufficient hand-eye coordination to handle and work with small delicate objects.
- Strong technical and people leadership personality is necessary
- Strong desire and motivation to develop a career as a future leader in R&D
- Ability to manage, plan, and prioritize projects
- Demonstrated leadership proficiency, learning agility, and adaptability
- Able to handle and organize large volumes of electronic data, information, and images. Passion for data collection.
Effective communication skills, especially for presenting scientific results, keeping records and working collaboratively in a team of scientists are necessary
