Job description

Position duties will include tagging red oak trees in abandoned experimental plots in Ohio/Michigan and organizing and digitizing historic experimental library records related to an upcoming red oak project for future study. The project itself will aim to utilize a historic red oak experiment to understand survivorship, growth, phenology and wildlife value of a variety of red oak ecotypes in the context of climate change. Duties will also include engaging with landowners to find participants and sites for an upcoming woodlot birds project and undertaking some preliminary habitat and bird assessments in woodlots associated with this project. The latter project aims to look at factors such as lot size, connectivity, management history, forest structure, composition, invadedness etc. in relation to bird communities. Other duties are likely to include supporting undergraduate honors students to complete fieldwork, assisting with restoration-focused workshops, and completing other general tasks as required. The position will be based within SENR Columbus at Kottman Hall, but travel and work on the OSU Wooster campus will be required two days per week. Travel and accommodation for fieldwork will be covered as required.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Associate's Degree
  • 0-1 years of relevant experience

Desired qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant subject
  • Experience in restoration, bird and habitat surveying, environmental, or other relevant field work
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Experience with data entry and data management
  • Knowledge of native and invasive plants of Ohio
  • Knowledge of native birds of Ohio
