JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Directs the strategic planning, development, and implementation of a program.
- Serves as a liaison and key spokesperson to various committees and organizations.
- Responds to inquiries and assists in promoting the program. Assists with policy formulation, strategy development, and the management of daily operations.
- May collaborate with representatives from private, government, and international agencies.
- Conducts research, designs new initiatives, and writes publishable articles and papers.
- May supervise staff.
ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
- The Senior Associate Director represents the Digital Publishing in the Humanities initiative at national and international conferences and develops relationships with colleagues in the wider academic publishing and digital humanities communities.
- This position is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of the Changing Landscape of Publication in the Humanities grant.
- The primary responsibilities of the senior associate director are: (1) to support Emory faculty in the development of digital, open access monographs for publication with academic presses, and (2) to understand and communicate the changing landscape of academic publishing, particularly the emerging digital publication initiatives at university presses, to faculty across the humanities.
- The position requires close collaboration with campus partners, including the Center for Faculty Development and Excellence (CFDE), the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship (ECDS), and Emory Libraries’ Scholarly Communications Office (SCO).
- This position will be supported for a minimum period of five years, with the possibility of renewal.
- Serves as an advisor to faculty about the publication options for their monographs, and acting as a liaison between humanities faculty and the staff of university presses, when appropriate.
- Coordinates individual consultations, project team meetings, collaborative workshops, and roundtable discussions to facilitate the development of digital monographs by faculty authors.
- Shepherds faculty authors through the application process for open access subventions and working closely with SCO to negotiate open access agreements with publishers.
- Serves as Emory’s primary representative for the TOME initiative by attending annual meetings and participating in various TOME working groups, to date those focused on branding, metrics, and publisher agreements.
- Attends and presents at national and international publishing, library, and digital scholarship conferences on behalf of Emory’s digital publishing initiative.
- Develops campus programming for faculty, staff, and graduate students across Emory’s humanities community to foster greater understanding of digital publishing options. Recurring events include the Digital Monograph Writers Workshop, Explorations in Digital Publishing workshop series, and Adventures in Digital Publishing web series.
- Contributes to Emory’s mission of graduate education in the humanities through the development and administration of the Graduate Community of Digital Scholars, in collaboration with ECDS and the Laney Graduate School.
- Duties include recruiting and selecting students for the cohort, structuring cohort meetings throughout the year, participating in individual consultations with students and their advisors, approving student funding requests, and offering personalized guidance to individual students.
- Provides annual reports to both the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Emory College.
- Oversees publicity for the initiative, including publishing articles about the digital publishing initiative and maintaining the DPH website and social media presence.
- Gives presentations to classes and other campus groups or visitors as requested.
- Supervises the initiative’s Community Outreach Coordinator.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in a field related to the program and seven years of professional experience related to the program and previous supervisory and program/project management experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
- Master's degree preferred.
