We are currently hiring a Sensory Scientist in Boston, MA, Cincinnati, OH or Breinigsville, PA .
*A Hybrid position at Boston Beer requires that our coworkers reside within commuting distance to be onsite according to their teams’ weekly schedule.
The Sensory Scientist will develop research plans that will accomplish gaining knowledge about attributes that amplifies the consumer’s love of profiles, and to use this information to guide the development of the highest quality and the most enjoyable products. Doing this through excellent execution of consumer testing, a keen understanding of trained panel data, and bringing in new sensory methods. This person will help to identify trends in the beverage industry, guide new Product Development with organoleptic insights, and build added strength to reporting consumer data. Scientific focus, prioritization and project management skills are essential.
What You'll Brew:
- Develop strong research plans based on objectives of projects.
- Uphold and improve strong consumer testing – utilizing sensory methods, sensory tools and statistical evaluation to report results that help to guide R&D projects, assessment of competitors, and validation new products
- Conducts both advanced and basic statistical analysis and interpretation sensory data, including generating statistical results and graphs for completed sensory data.
- Utilize data science to extract, transform, and load disparate sources of data (including sensory data) to generate cross-functional learnings.
- Conducts independent or collaborative research on unique product and/or profile topics that deliver against larger business questions.
- Independently develops focused Sensory panels – including developing new methods and bringing new method into the company
- Making & delivering external presentations on sensory evaluation to professional organizations and/or continuing education programs/seminars
- Staying current with literature and information about sensory evaluation
- Must have excellent communication skills including ability to write concise, informative reports and verbally present complex technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Continue development and assessment of research and implement new sensory methods
- Promotes high product quality sensorial achievements within a professional work environment
- Providing technical direction and mentoring to other scientific professionals on staff
What Ingredients You'll Bring:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or MS Degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics or another related field
- Minimum of 2 years Sensory Science project work experience with Ph.D
- Or minimum of 4 years Sensory Science experience with a masters
- In-depth knowledge of technical tools that support sensory testing (automated data collection systems, statistical software, like FIZZ or Compusense)
- Experienced in panel training & panel leadership
- Proficiency in both advanced & basic statistical analysis (XLSTAT a plus)
- Experience coaching and mentoring others
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Proven success multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
- High degree of ownership and professional commitment
- Travel up to 10% of the time
Preferred Qualifications:
- Brewing or alcohol industry a plus
