Job description

Brunswick’s Special Education Department seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and creative elementary special education teacher to lead its new Kindergarten Transitions Program at Kate Furbish Elementary School. This Program has been designed to address the needs of a portion of Brunswick’s Kindergarten special education student population – students who currently need to develop the readiness skills for Kindergarten. It is our hope that this Program will give these students the space and time to develop familiarity with the public school setting while strategically integrating foundational academic skill development into students’ programs as appropriate. The Program’s curriculum will focus on developing its students’ school readiness skills such as self-control, self-concept, and social competence, as well as fostering student initiative, curiosity, persistence, and reflection. A successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, independence, an ability to build positive relationships with students, and a willingness to collaborate with parents, community members, special educators, regular educators, service providers, and administrators as appropriate.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Understand the developmental strengths and needs of Kindergarten students;
  • Demonstrate the competence and flexibility necessary to program for students with both academic and functional needs;
  • Create and deliver specially designed instruction in academics, social skills and executive functioning skills;
  • Create classroom structures that support student needs;
  • Collect and utilize academic and functional data to inform interventions and instruction;
  • Supervise educational technicians;
  • Complete special education documentation in accordance with Department expectations, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • Maine State Certification - 282 (K-8)
  • Valid Maine Criminal History Records Check

Applications are requested by December 9, 2022, but position will be opened until filled.
