The Gillette News Record is looking for its next sports editor.

The position comes with a level of creative and editorial control over local sports coverage for a twice-weekly in print, daily online publication.

And this northeastern Wyoming town of more than 30,000 people loves its sports.

The ideal candidate will primarily cover two prep high schools in Gillette along with other teams and events, such as a professional indoor football team, a junior college with six sports teams, a junior hockey team and American Legion baseball.

Gillette plays host to numerous sporting events in a calendar year, from youth basketball and soccer tournaments to rodeos and amateur MMA fights. The town is preparing to host the National High School Finals Rodeo for the 13th time in the summer of 2023.

Gillette’s two high schools compete at the highest classification in the state of Wyoming (Class 4A). The two schools host a handful of state events including the Class 4A state tennis tournament, the Class 4A state indoor track championships and the Class 4A state softball tournament.

Gillette College competes at the Division I level of the NJCAA. The college features a men’s and women’s basketball team, men’s and women’s soccer teams, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s rodeo teams.

The gamers and week-to-week beat coverage are essential, but not at the expense of depth and storytelling. The editorial team of the News Record encourages and fosters feature and enterprise writing, with countless stories to tell within Gillette’s local sports universe.

This job allows you to immerse in your beats, but also in your community. Gillette is a proud town with a storied history of local sports. Once a boom town, Gillette has a rich history reported by the News Record for over 100 years.

Gillette is less than an hour from Devils Tower and about two hours from the Bighorn Mountains and the Black Hills of South Dakota. The town boasts excellent public amenities, including a modern recreation center, walking and biking trails and several parks.

Experience with page design and photography skills are a plus. Hours vary but will require working weekends and some holidays.
