Role and Responsibilities:
Trusts & Estates / Tax Associate:
· Integral involvement in creating departmental content for the company’s website, plus white papers on tax & financial planning.
· Help Wealth Managers & their teams assess, design, and implement comprehensive financial and estate plans for high net-worth clients.
· Support Wealth Managers throughout the financial and wealth transfer planning process, incorporating products into that planning where appropriate.
· Analyze estate planning & business documents and compose evaluations of them; this typically involves Wills, Trusts, Medical Directives, Powers of Attorney, Shareholder Agreements, Entity Operating Agreements, Charitable Organization Documents, etc.
· Review asset titling, including joint ownership with family members or others (such as tenancy in common, joint tenancy with rights of survivorship, tenancy by the entirety, etc.).
· Analyze some tax returns as part of financial planning efforts; normally involving income, gift & estate tax returns, etc.
· Compare & propose income tax strategies for entrepreneurs/business owners, including recommendations of qualified retirement plans and/or deferred compensation arrangements.
· Research legal & tax issues and discuss them with client’s tax and/or legal counsel, in order to build a consensus on the client’s best course of action; then, coordinate with those tax & legal advisors to implement the client’s decisions.
· Provide broad-based internal consulting to Wealth Managers, serving as a resource to answer financial & tax questions.
· Generally work along with team members to fulfill the department’s technical role in the firm.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
· Minimum years of experience: 2+ from a law firm, accounting firm, financial service organization or combination thereof.
· Must have a Juris Doctor degree; a Master of Law in Taxation is helpful but not required.
· Familiarity with income tax planning strategies is helpful but not required.
· CPA or IRS enrolled agent designation is welcomed but not required.
· Comfortable meeting with and presenting strategies to clients & Financial Advisors in an environment which may be demanding and fast paced at times.
