Responsibilities

Backyard Bookkeeper is looking for new talent to join our team. As a member of this team, you will be keeping the books (data entry, reconciliation, review, financial statements) for several clients around the country. This is a w-2 position and requires you to sign a non-compete agreement. Most of the work will be from home, although we have in-person team meetings occasionally and you may need to visit local clients once in a while. A cover letter is REQUIRED for consideration for any position, and you must also be a resident of Utah, South Carolina, or Georgia. (We may consider out-of-state candidates on a case by case basis.)
Bookkeeping work will vary according to candidate skill and experience. While the work may start slowly during training, by the end of your first six months with us, you may be handling up to 20 remote clients.

Qualifications

  • Daytime availability for meetings and client calls. Even though you can do most of the work whenever you want, you must have regular availability during regular business hours in order to communicate with your clients and participate in team meetings and training. In addition, our training is pretty hands-on, and there will be more required daytime Zoom meetings for the first 2-4 months of your employment.
  • Prepared to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, and probably more like 25-30 in the long term.
  • Able to provide good, consistent service to clients who are sometimes assertive and demanding.
  • At least one year of accounting experience in a small business environment.
  • Thorough understanding of general accounting/double-entry bookkeeping principles, comfortable making journal entries.
  • Excellent communication skills, including through email, phone, video chat, and other online media; be able to respond to messages within one business day.
  • Self-motivated, able to work effectively under deadlines without much supervision, excellent follow-through.
  • Have your own computer with a number pad, headset, and webcam, along with a good internet connection.
  • Type at least 50 WPM, not afraid of data entry (sometimes it gets tedious, but we do our best to mix it up with more interesting work).
  • Generally tech savvy on computers, Windows, Microsoft Office, and internet; able to learn new software.

Additional InformationBenefits:

  • Flexible hours
  • On the job training and development
  • Work from the comfort of your own home
  • Interact with lots of interesting people and companies in varying industries
  • Have a variety of ongoing projects, rather than keeping the same routine every day and week
  • Mileage and home office expense reimbursements
  • Each team has an in-person meeting (usually lunch or dinner) once a quarter - attendance is required in most cases
  • We hold two events each year in the SLC, Utah area: a company retreat in late spring and a holiday party in early December. Attendance is required at both events if you live within reasonable traveling distance (mileage is reimbursed). If not, the company will pay for a plane ticket to at least one of the semiannual get-togethers.
  • We currently have two office locations in Sandy and Lehi, Utah. You are welcome to take advantage of the office space if you prefer to work outside of your home office some of the time. We may add more locations in the future as the need arises.

***One last note: we have an intensive, careful hiring process because we are dedicated to choosing the best qualified candidates who will work well within our company culture and provide excellent service to our clients. Please be prepared to have as many as five interviews before we make any final decision, and the whole process may take several weeks.
