Duties
The work leader will demonstrate and employ proper work methods or procedures to the crew being led. Advises other employees to follow the Supervisor's instructions and meet deadlines. Checks work that is in progress and again when it is completed to ensure compliance with Supervisor's instructions on sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines. Keeps Supervisor informed on the progress of work, or any delays encountered. Obtains additional guidance or decisions from the Supervisor when problems or unfamiliar situations are encountered during the work. The Cemetery Caretaker performs jobs requiring mainly manual skills and physical strength. Performs a variety of tasks, such as operating small tractors and riding lawn mowers; transplanting shrubs; digging graves to the proper level; cutting and removing sod, tamping and leveling dirt using hand and power tools; digging and squaring graves using pneumatic equipment, picks and shovels; assisting in lifting and placing caskets on lowering devices; loading and unloading materials; aligning headstones; cleaning and clearing cemetery grounds of debris using power trimmers, chainsaws, axes, shovels, rakes, blowers, vacuums etc.; weeding, mulching, and applying fertilizer; pruning shrubs and low level dead branches; removing snow and ice; cleaning headstones using sprayer and hand brush; and cleaning service and administrative areas.
Works within the team and sets the pace and standard for all tasks. Performs a variety of tasks such as digging and shaping graves; setting up casket-lowering devices; locating and preparing gravesites; maintaining the appearance of the cemetery grounds; operating equipment on roads, streets, field and rough terrain, and in transporting personnel, equipment, and supplies; and performing routine operator equipment maintenance and minor repairs.
Work Schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed in both an office setting and field setting with exposure to outside weather conditions. May require occasional travel to various NCA conferences and other national cemeteries for training purposes. Incumbent is required to walk the grounds for extended periods (2-4 miles per a day), providing periodic assistance in using hand tools, operating equipment, and assisting in the lifting of materials weighing up to 240 pounds. Incumbent ensures headstone setting, raising, realigning, repair, cleaning, unloading, checking, verifying inscription, and storing is accomplished. Removes snow and ice from roads, walkways, and parking areas as necessary during winter weather events; using sand/salt as directed. When not serving in a work leader capacity, he/she performs duties as required by the organization. Reviews and inspects equipment and structures, accessing some areas with use of ladders, as necessary. Moderate to heavy physical effort is required. Must possess a valid state driver's license.

Your background must demonstrate work involved in leading work pertaining to landscaping, grounds keeping, or other related trades experience that includes the use of hand tools and/or power tools, and the safe operation of related machinery and equipment used in cemetery caretaking practices, as described in the duties section of the announcement.

Physical Effort: Physical demands on the incumbent consist of walking, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, pushing pulling, tugging and climbing. Must be able to lift, up to 75 pounds. Incumbent should request assistance whenever performing tasks that require lifting more than 75 pounds. Must be able to walk in all types of terrain and soil conditions. Incumbent is required to wear personal protective equipment when appropriate. Protective equipment includes personal protection for the eyes, hearing, face, head, back, extremities, protective clothing, respiratory devices and protective shields and barriers. This equipment will be maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition.
Working Conditions: Work is typically performed outside in all type of inclement weather to include sun, wind, rain, cold, or snow and under periodic muddy conditions. The incumbent may operate machinery that causes noise and vibrations, emit carbon monoxide, have moving parts which may cut or harm the body and requires the use of safety-protective clothing and devices. The position requires walking and standing including significant periods of outdoor duty to perform tasks such as attending services and inspecting sections of the cemetery (including sections which are active interment areas or sections under construction). The position requires bending, stooping, and lifting cemetery records, manuals, cremains containers, and other small items. The position requires assisting with the moving of caskets placed on wheeled biers or church carts in and out of committal shelters.
