Job description
This position will be assigned to the Administrative Services Division under the direct command of the Community Services Section. Assignments will be made in neighborhoods that have high incidents of both violent juvenile crime and chronic school absenteeism. The objective of these officers will be community engagement and education on the dangers of school absenteeism as well as training to build parental awareness of resources available to track student progress within the schools.
These officers will partner with the City’s schools, School Resource Officers, Department of Social Services and leaders of communities in which they are assigned. The officer’s efforts will focus on reducing juvenile violence by increasing community awareness of the importance of education and increasing community engagement in local economic opportunities.
Duration of Assignment is typically 5 (five) years from the date of appointment. Incumbent may reapply at conclusion of assignment. External applicants would be ongoing if selected. An extension may be granted by the Chief of Police
High School Diploma or GED and Vocational/Technical training in law enforcement required. Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license.
Training in public speaking, leadership and conflict resolution preferred. Internal candidates must not currently be on probation and external candidates must possess current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services law enforcement certification at the time of application submission. External applicants must have separated or willing to separate from prior agency and be in good standing and at least five years of prior law enforcement experience is desirable.
Fluency in Spanish desired but not required. Strong public speaking and presentation development skills. The personnel assigned to this unit must be able to work in a creative team environment, work independently at times and have ability to successfully partner with community organizations.
Candidates must possess and demonstrate high initiative, a strong work ethic and a strong foundational understanding of the role of law enforcement in the community. Personnel assigned to this unit will be expected to work flexible hours at times that permits evening, weekend and after school engagement.

Final interviews will be conducted with the candidates by a panel and external candidates must agree to participate in full hiring process, to include agility, polygraph, physical and background testing prior to final selection. Factors to be considered are: relevant training and experience. The interview panel will make a recommendation to the Chief of Police who makes a final appointment decision.
