George Eastman Museum Overview
The George Eastman Museum is located in Rochester, New York, on the estate of George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography and motion picture film. Founded in 1947 as an independent nonprofit institution, it is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives. IT Environment Summary
The museum's main location is at 900 East Avenue in Rochester, NY, with approximately 105 end-user computers; the museum also has three offsite locations in the greater Rochester area. The on-site data center houses a VMWare virtual-servers environment consisting mostly of Windows operating systems with a few Linux or web-based servers, along with the associated storage area network (SANs) and backup systems. Most of the museum’s applications are housed onsite, but a few live externally in the cloud.
Job Overview:
The George Eastman Museum is seeking an experienced Information Technology (IT) Director who oversees the IT staff and is responsible for all IT infrastructure supporting the institution. The IT Director will provide vision, direction, and support for technological solutions that meet and enhance mission-critical and business operation needs. The IT Director works closely with all departments across the museum to identify, recommend, prioritize, develop, and implement secure and cost-effective solutions.
The IT Director is expected to be a working leader (hands-on), assisting with maintaining the IT systems at the museum, consisting of its network, server, backup, and storage area network (SAN) environments. This position ensures compliance with IT security standards and best practices. This position is also responsible for the maintenance and high availability of enterprise applications and associated databases to support organizational goals. This position will collaborate with museum project teams and be engaged in museum-wide projects and initiatives on an ongoing basis.
Responsibilities:
Administrative and Supervisory Responsibilities:
● Oversee the Systems Administrator (part time), Systems and Network Administrator (full time), Technical Specialist (part time), and external IT consultants or vendors working with the museum. Responsibilities include supervising the IT staff to accomplish departmental and museum goals and objectives, delegating and assigning responsibilities as needed, holding staff accountable for accomplishing objectives, and evaluating staff levels and capacities to deal with potential surges and service demands. The IT Director should meet regularly with the IT team to discuss work progress, resolve problems, and ensure quality of work standards are met.
● Manage and facilitate technology decision-making and provide leadership for the technological aspects of the museum’s operations from the broadest possible perspective.
● Work with all areas/departments to continually assess the museum’s IT requirements and set a strategy for achieving those needs. This includes developing a 3-year IT strategic plan for infrastructure replenishments, growth, enhancements, or technological advancements in alignment with the museum’s mission.
● Partner with and build alliances with vendors and other organizations to lead to long-term, mutually beneficial relationships. Explore new and creative funding sources (grants, foundations, gift donations) to help build and maintain strategic IT projects and plans.
● Set department budgets and assist with project budgets involving other departments/operations as needed. Consult with other departments on the implications and costs of implementing new technologies and databases.
● Update and develop relevant policies and procedures, collaborating with other staff regarding information technology. Responsible for the dissemination of these policies to the museum at large.
● Develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with end users from across the museum. Ensure their issues are being heard and addressed. Clearly communicate action plans, results, ideas, priorities, and decisions.
● Serve as the institutional lead for IT Project Management and as the institutional resource for ERP/business/museum application support. This includes system selections and implementations as well as upgrade and major system operational change projects.
Technical Responsibilities:
● Desktop (including hardware, software, peripherals, and applications): Responsible for the strategy, purchase, implementation, maintenance/support of all desktop technologies. Supervises Help Desk staff.
● Infrastructure Environment: Responsible for the strategy, purchase, implementation, and maintenance/support/patching of all servers, server software, and the server room/data center in the museum. In addition, responsible for the backup and recovery process and management of all storage.
● Network and Telecom Environment: Responsible for the strategy, purchase, implementation, security, and maintenance/support of all telecommunications within the museum, including the VoIP phone system, all cabling and infrastructure, LAN/WLAN and related hardware/software (routers, switches, firewall, Active Directory, etc.), all layers of the network, and wireless infrastructure.
● Applications and Databases: Responsible for the strategy, purchase, implementation, and maintenance/support of all applications and SQL databases in the museum, including the business (ERP) and collections-related applications, related reporting, new development, and custom/niche applications and databases (usually grant-based).
● IT Project Management: Responsible for management of all technology and technology-related projects, including system selections and implementations and operating and capital-funded projects.
● IT Security: Maintain an IT Security posture and ongoing risk mitigation; responsible for maintaining the firewalls and security posture for maximum museum protection. Develop and maintain technical and user policies, procedures, and SLAs for server, network, and security, including a network and server diagram. In addition, ensure compliance with PCI, FERPA, GDPR, and WCAG IT security standards. Maintain and update the IT Security annual strategy and provide a review to the Board of Trustees.
● Enterprise Mail System: Responsible for management of the enterprise e-mail system and associated applications supporting user collaboration and storage, Intranet site, and directory, including user account management.
Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is required.
- A minimum of two years of proven experience with IT security, strategic planning, project management and budget management are required.
- Requires at least 4–6 years of recent hands-on experience working in an IT Infrastructure environment in either a system or network administrator or equivalent role.
- Requires at least 3–5 years of management experience within an enterprise environment, preferably in a non-profit, cultural or similar institution.
- Recent hands-on experience with these systems are preferred: VEEAM backup & recovery, VMWare, Cisco router and switches, ASA firewall, remote server management systems, Gallery Systems’ TMS collection management software, Microsoft Dynamics, Mitel Telecommunications system, Google GSuite, SQL Server Management Studio, and directly supporting MS active directory and group policy.
- Understand and appreciate a non-profit environment, including the IT security compliance associated with each area.
- Must be able to deal with the ambiguity that sometimes comes with fragmented information technology and work effectively to meet the needs of a diverse group of users.
- Must be an effective communicator with the ability to listen well and draw input from others, yet at the same time be able to be decisive and persuasive in accomplishing objectives.
Work Environment
Work takes place primarily in an office environment with moderate to light noise.
Physical Demands
Position requires sitting, standing, crouching, bending, stooping, kneeling, walking, lifting, speaking, seeing, and reaching up to retrieve equipment.

Salary is based on experience.
