The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Culpeper District is seeking qualified Laborers to fill vacancies at our Gordonsville AHQ.

These positions will assist with:
  • Repair and maintenance of State roadways and their surrounding right of ways.
  • Operation of hand and power tools
  • Performance of minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
  • Performs manual labor, practices safety at all times, and works as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Positions are designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job is required during emergency situations and requires work outside of normal hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.


This hourly/wage position is not entitled to the State’s benefits package. Positions filled through this recruitment are limited to an average of 29 hours per week and 1,500 hours in a 12-month period.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light and medium equipment used for highway maintenance and repair
  • Ability to read and to follow oral and written instructions
  • Valid driver’s license required

Preferred Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education
  • Experience in heavy equipment operation
  • Experience performing preventative maintenance and minor equipment repairs
  • Experience with emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up

Special Requirements
  • Fingerprint-based criminal history records check required. References, work history, and DMV records verified prior to commencement of employment. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical.
  • Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, terrain and standing for long periods. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense.
