Description of Work Unit
At the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community….every day.
The Rehabilitation Department at the CSU VTH is a subsection of the Orthopedic Medicine and Mobility Department. It has two general goals: to provide exceptional education to our students, interns and residents and to provide exceptional care to our clients and their animals.

Position Summary
This position completes rehabilitation treatments developed by the rehabilitation therapist. A treatment includes direct patient care, client communications associated with that care, medical record documentation, protocol-based home programs, and follow up visit scheduling. Changes to the treatment plan cannot be made without rehabilitation therapist approval. This position also instructs veterinary students in protocol-based rehabilitation techniques including modalities, manual therapies, and therapeutic exercises. This position also assists with maintaining and cleaning treatment area and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must demonstrate the following in the application document:
  • An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology AND
  • One year of experience in small animal rehabilitation or certification in small animal rehabilitation

Substitutions
  • Two additional years of experience in small animal rehabilitation will substitute for each year of required education.
  • A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology will substitute for the associate’s degree and, at the agency’s discretion, the year of experience.
*Please note, to qualify for substitution of education in place of experience, a transcript must be attached to the application.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Evaluations
  • Assists rehabilitation therapist with evaluations by completing the following:
  • Prior to visit, reviews chart and prepares evaluation area
  • At time of visit, greets clients and verbally captures a thorough medical history
  • Safely transport patient to the therapy gym
  • Assists with patient handling during the rehabilitation evaluation
  • Assists with documentation of the rehabilitation evaluation
  • When therapist has completed evaluation, initiates treatment plan
  • Completes treatments including modalities, manual therapies, aquatic therapy, and therapeutic exercise as defined in the treatment plan
  • During treatments, notifies therapist of any changes in patient condition
  • At completion of visit, completes billing and medical records including home plan
  • Returns patient to the owner and provides overview of patient’s findings and recommended treatment plan
  • Educates clients on home exercise program and activity restrictions as directed in the treatment plan
  • In conjunction with client and therapist, schedules follow up rehabilitation visits

Outpatient Rehabilitation Treatments
  • Prior to visit, reviews chart, print treatment plan, and prepare treatment area
  • At time of visit, greet clients and verbally capture a thorough medical history since previous visit
  • Safely transport patient to the therapy gym

  • Complete pre-visit patient screen
  • If medical history or screen indicate a decline in function, notified therapist before starting treatment
  • As indicated by the therapist, modify treatment plan or complete previously developed treatment plan
  • Completes treatments including modalities, manual therapies, aquatic therapy, and therapeutic exercise as defined in the treatment plan
  • During treatments, notifies therapist of any changes in patient condition
  • At completion of visit, completes billing and medical records including home plan
  • Returns patient to the owner and provides overview of patient’s response to treatment
  • Educates clients on home exercise program and activity restrictions as directed in the treatment plan
  • In conjunction with client and therapist, schedules follow up rehabilitation visits
Inpatient Rehabilitation
  • Communicates with hospital staff to determine rehabilitation case load for the day
  • Communicates new evaluations to the team
  • If diagnosis is standard, complete treatment protocol as previously defined
  • If diagnosis is not standard, notify therapist that evaluation is required
  • Assists with patient handling during rehabilitation evaluation
  • Assists with documentation of the rehabilitation evaluation
  • When therapist has completed evaluation, initiates treatment plan
  • Completes treatments including modalities, manual therapies, aquatic therapy, and therapeutic exercise as defined in the treatment plan
  • During treatments, notifies therapist of any changes in patient condition
  • At completion of visit, completes billing and medical records including home plan
  • Collaborates directly with referring DVM to determine discharge date and time
  • Orders all necessary home equipment for safe discharge such as wheelchairs, orthotics and positioning devices
  • Educates clients on home exercise program, activity restrictions and safe use of home equipment as directed in the treatment plan
  • Schedules patients for outpatient treatments as indicated in the treatment plan

  • Maintains aquatics equipment water quality within therapeutic ranges. Documents water quality measurements in water quality book . If water quality is sub standard, completes water treatment modifications to bring water up to standard prior to any treatment.
  • Cleans aquatics filters and treadmill per manufacturer guidelines
  • Organizes and cleans the rehabilitation gym daily
  • Maintains all rehabilitation equipment including therapeutic exercise equipment, Lite Gait, cold modalities, and carts/wheelchairs
